10 Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Retirement Home in Kerala

Choosing a senior living community in Kerala for your parents is one of the most important decisions you will make as a family. And when you are living abroad in the Gulf, the UK, the US, or Canada, you cannot simply drop in for a visit on a Saturday afternoon.

You have to ask the right questions, and you have to ask them before you commit. Here are the 10 most important ones.

01

What level of care do you provide, and can it increase over time?

Some communities offer only independent living. Others provide assisted care or can transition residents as their needs grow. Ask this upfront so you are not forced to move your parent to a different facility later.

02

What is the staff-to-resident ratio, and who is on duty at night?

The quality of care depends heavily on how many trained staff are available at any given time. Night cover is especially important. A good community will answer this clearly and confidently.

03

Is there a nurse or doctor on site 24 hours a day?

Medical emergencies do not follow office hours. Find out exactly who is on site overnight and what the emergency response procedure is. For communities in Kochi, Aluva, and Ernakulam, also ask which hospital they have a tie-up with.

04

How will you keep me informed as a family member living abroad?

This is critical for NRI families. Ask whether they do regular WhatsApp updates, video calls, monthly reports, or family portal access. You should never have to chase for news about your own parents.

05

Can I do a live video tour before visiting in person?

A reputable community will happily arrange a live video walkthrough. If they are reluctant, that tells you something. You should be able to see the rooms, common areas, garden, and dining hall before making any decision.

06

What is included in the monthly fee, and what costs extra?

Get a full written breakdown. Some communities advertise a low base rate and then charge separately for meals, laundry, physiotherapy, and excursions. Understand the full picture before committing.

07

What is the contract arrangement? Is there a minimum stay or an exit clause?

Some communities require a large upfront deposit with complex refund terms. Others operate on a simpler monthly basis. Read the agreement carefully and ask what happens if your parent needs to leave.

08

Can other family members in Kerala visit freely?

Your parents should never feel isolated from their local relatives. Ask about visiting hours, guest meal arrangements, and whether family can stay overnight in special circumstances.

09

What does a typical day look like for a resident?

A good senior living community has structure: morning routines, group meals, activities, rest time, and social events. Ask to see a weekly schedule. Residents who are engaged and stimulated are healthier and happier.

10

Can I speak to another NRI family whose parents already live here?

This is the most valuable question of all. A real family's honest experience tells you more than any brochure or sales call. Any good community will be happy to connect you.
